JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Police Officer - Police

JOB SUMMARY:
The Police Officer serves the needs of the community by supporting the protection of life and property, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws by patrolling an assigned beat on foot, bicycle or in a radio equipped patrol car, responding to calls for assistance, conducting criminal investigations, and performing special assignments at the discretion of the supervisor. 


DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities described below are indicative of what the Police Officer may be asked to perform; other duties may be assigned.

Initial Calls for Service:
   
%uF0D8 Initiates communication between victim, and accused with the department.
%uF0D8 Completes all necessary reports in a timely manner.
%uF0D8 Communicates with dispatch as to daily activity.
%uF0D8 Enforces traffic and parking regulations; directs traffic, and enforces speed regulations with the use of radar equipment.
%uF0D8 Inspects business and homes for security insufficiencies.
%uF0D8 Inspects taverns, business establishments and other places for signs of criminal activity.
%uF0D8 Investigates narcotic violations.
%uF0D8 Contributes to the daily operations of the department by attending shift briefings at the start of duty tour; and communicating with other department personnel regarding cases and previous daily activities.
%uF0D8 Frequents businesses, addresses citizens, various city organizations and various aged pupils, all the while promoting the department's community relations programs.
%uF0D8 Endorse and promote the Healthy Communities/Problem Solving/Community Oriented Policing philosophy within our organization and community.

 

 


Crime Scenes:
%uF0D8 Conducts or coordinates investigative activities at crime scenes.
%uF0D8 Preserves the scene for integrity purposes.
%uF0D8 Conducts initial interviews of victims, witnesses, and/or suspects.
%uF0D8 Identifies, collects, and evaluates evidence.
%uF0D8 Records the scene for both investigative and prosecutorial purposes.
%uF0D8 Transports and records all physical evidence into safekeeping; safeguarding the chain of evidence.

Follow-up Investigations:
%uF0D8 Locates and interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
%uF0D8 Generates or pursues investigative leads.
%uF0D8 Reviews reports, documents, files, and other data to evaluate criminal activity and identify perpetrators.
%uF0D8 Exercises the lawful use of arrest, force, search, and seizure powers.
%uF0D8 Accurately and thoroughly documents relevant evidentiary facts, occurrences, and activities.
%uF0D8 Works with the District Attorney's Office to obtain necessary subpoenas, warrants, and other legal process.
%uF0D8 Serves criminal process to include warrants and subpoenas.
%uF0D8 Promotes professional relationships within the department, City government, the community, and outside agencies in furtherance of the department's mission, goals, and objectives.
%uF0D8 Appears in criminal and on some occasions, civil court for testimony when subpoenas are issued.
%uF0D8 Performs surveillance duties as needed.
%uF0D8 Works with juvenile services in the enforcement of laws, which are violated by those individuals younger than 17 years of age to include proper agency direction and counseling.

Administrative Duties:
%uF0D8 Acts as officer in charge of patrol in the absence of ranking supervisor.
%uF0D8 Requests and maintains maintenance of department issued equipment and gear.
%uF0D8 Maintains forms and documents inventory and control.
%uF0D8 Conducts research in specialized or new areas.

 


QUALIFACTION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required at the time of hire or for continuation of employment.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

%uF0D8 High School diploma or equivalent.
%uF0D8 Must meet all Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) and local ordinance requirements.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

%uF0D8 Ability to cooperate with staff and the public.
%uF0D8 Knowledge of department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, memorandums, and directives associated with position.
%uF0D8 Knowledge of provisions, procedures, sources, and elements of state and federal law and municipal ordinances as related to duties and responsibilities.
%uF0D8 Knowledge of concepts, procedures, and techniques related to interviewing, investigation, confessions, defensive and arrest tactics, evidence preservation, collection and processing, search and seizure, and the use of force and basic life support.
%uF0D8 Knowledge of information contained in daily roll call, activity logs, status reports, and teletypes to be sufficiently informed of events or circumstances that affect the effective, efficient, and safe performance of job duties, tasks, and responsibilities.
%uF0D8 Skill in attaining or maintaining required level of proficiency or certification in those job responsibilities, duties, or tasks where standards are formally defined or required.
%uF0D8 Skill in problem solving and the ability to maintain positive working relationships with others.
%uF0D8 Ability to properly operate a motor vehicle and a variety of other equipment necessary to discharge job related duties and responsibilities.
