Our Purpose
The purpose of Code Enforcement is to investigate code enforcement complaints and ensure code compliance as directed by the codes, laws and practices adopted by the State of Texas and the City of Huntsville.
Codes Used by the City of Huntsville
The City of Huntsville has adopted the following documents related to property maintenance (see Chapters 6, 7, and 8,
City of Huntsville Code of Ordinances for the latest additions and amendments to these codes):

The Most Common Code Complaints
Overgrown Vegetation
Grass and weeds over 10 inches in height (International Property Maintenance Code Section 302.4; amended Huntsville Code Section 9.02.03-9); Owners or occupants are given 7 days to bring their property into compliance. After 7 days, a citation may be issued and/or further action may be taken in order for the City of Huntsville to abate the nuisance and place a lien on the property.
Junk, Inoperable, or Abandoned Vehicles
A junk vehicle is defined as a vehicle that is self-propelled, has an expired registration or inspection sticker and is wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, inoperable for more than 72 hours on the public right-of-way or inoperable for more than 30 consecutive days on private property. (International Property Maintenance Code Section 302.8; or as defined in Chapter 683 of the Texas Transportation Code.)
Substandard/Dilapidated Structures
Any building considered unsafe due to deterioration, unsafe wiring, fire hazard, etc. Owners are given 30 days to repair, remove or demolish the structure. After 30 days, further legal action may be taken in order for the City of Huntsville to abate the nuisance and place a lien on the property.
Trash, Debris and/or Over Accumulation
Owners or occupants are given 7 days to bring their property into compliance. After 7 days, a citation may be issued, and/or further action may be taken in order for the City of Huntsville to abate the nuisance and place a lien on the property.
