The Huntsville Police Department received a call of a suspicious person at Wal-Mart, located at 141 Interstate 45, around 8:45 p.m. Friday, January 11. A Huntsville Police officer arrived at 8:50 p.m. and encountered a subject armed with hatchet in the parking lot. The officer began a verbal dialogue with the subject, attempting to persuade him to drop the hatchet. A short time later, additional Huntsville Police officers arrived on scene and continued to advise the subject to drop the hatchet.
When the subject began advancing toward the officers, a Taser was deployed twice with no effect. The armed subject continued to charge toward the officers. An officer, being in fear of his life, discharged his service weapon striking the suspect.
Officers immediately summoned Huntsville-Walker County Emergency Medical Services to the scene. The subject received medical treatment on-scene and was then transported to Conroe Regional Hospital.
“Due to the quick actions of our officers, a dangerous suspect was prevented from harming them or any other members of our community,” Police Chief Kevin Lunsford said. “Please join us in prayers for all involved.”
The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation, that is ongoing, with charges pending.
