Our Purpose

The Development Services Department which consists of the Planning, Building Inspections, Permitting, Code Enforcement, Health Inspections, and Support Services are dedicated to ensuring that all private and public development in the city of Huntsville meets the highest standards for health, safety, and structural integrity. Our mission is to deliver comprehensive inspection services for private developments and public improvement projects, alongside strict code enforcement for existing buildings and properties. By working closely with developers, contractors, property owners, and visitors, we help to create and maintain safe, reliable environments for those who live, work, and visit Huntsville. Through diligent application of state and local codes, laws, and engineering best practices, as outlined by the State of Texas and the City of Huntsville, we promote safe occupancy of properties. Our role goes beyond mere inspection; we are a proactive partner in the community’s growth which ensures that each building and property within our jurisdiction is built, maintained, and utilized in ways that prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of all occupants. Whether through initial construction inspections, routine property assessments, or ongoing code enforcement, inspections are committed to upholding a standard of excellence and integrity in every project.

Summary of Building Permits

A building permit is required to build a new structure, alter, or add on to an existing structure, or for lease space finish-outs. The permitting process is divided into two parts which are the plan review and inspections. The first part includes applying for the permit, plan review and approval, and obtaining the permit. The second part includes the construction and inspections. A permit is not complete until it receives final inspection approval. Permit applications and plans may be submitted in person or online. The plans will be submitted to the building official and/or planner for review.
