The Huntsville Fire Department is a combination department with the majority of the staff being volunteers. Without these volunteers we could not function and provide the types of service we do. The volunteers are trained under two standards: Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and/or State Firefighters' & Fire Marshals' Association (SFFMA). The TCFP is the regulatory commission governing all paid fire departments in Texas. The SFFMA is the regulatory commission governing all volunteer personnel in Texas. SFFMA standards are up to and equal to the certification levels of TCFP however, commission under TCFP is not required for volunteer personnel. Volunteer personnel are allowed to be members of the specialty teams run by the department, and are trained to operate all apparatus.
