What is Main Street?
The Main Street Program is a nationwide movement to revitalize historic downtowns, foster economic development, and strengthen community identity. Since 2001, Huntsville has proudly served as a Texas Main Street Community, dedicated to making our downtown a vibrant destination for residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs alike. Our approach blends preservation with progress — breathing new life into our historic core while supporting modern business growth.
History of the Main Street Program
Main Street America was established in 1980 as a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Recognizing the economic and cultural value of traditional downtowns, the program set out to provide a comprehensive approach to revitalization through preservation-based economic development.
The approach quickly proved effective, and in 1986, Texas became one of the first states to join the movement with its own Main Street initiative. Communities like Huntsville, designated in 2001, now benefit from a framework that has helped over 2,000 Main Street districts nationwide generate billions in reinvestment and job creation.
The success of Main Street lies in its community-driven model — uniting public and private sectors to implement a clear and sustainable strategy for change.

Core Activities:
- Historic Preservation: Working to preserve and restore the historic buildings and cultural heritage of downtown Huntsville, including significant landmarks and architectural features.
- Economic Development: Encouraging business growth and development in the downtown area by supporting local entrepreneurs, attracting new businesses, and creating a business-friendly environment.
- Beautification Projects: Implementing projects that improve the visual appeal of downtown, such as streetscape enhancements, public art installations, and the continuation of historical murals.
- Community Engagement: Organizing events, festivals, and activities that bring people downtown and create a sense of community. This includes collaboration with local organizations, businesses, and residents to foster a vibrant downtown.
- Advocacy and Education: Advocating for policies and initiatives that support downtown revitalization, and educating the community about the importance of preserving the historical and cultural aspects of the area.
