Our Purpose
The Planning Department plays a crucial role in managing the city’s growth and development. The primary responsibilities include land use planning and zoning, where it develops and enforces zoning ordinances and land use regulations to manage residential, commercial, industrial, and public spaces. The Planning Department also oversees development review and permitting by reviewing site plans, subdivision plats, and construction projects to ensure compliance with city regulations. The Planning Department focuses on long-range planning by preparing and maintaining a Comprehensive Plan that guides the city’s growth over the next 10 to 20 years and addresses key areas that include but are not limited to: transportation, housing, infrastructure, and community facilities. It also plays an active role in community development by managing programs aimed at improving neighborhoods and public spaces.
Public engagement is another essential aspect of the department’s role. The Planning Department facilitates Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment meetings, where public hearings are held to gather community feedback on planning and development projects. Summary of Planning

The planning department also engages with the public to gather feedback and advises city officials on land use matters while ensuring compliance with Development Code standards and historical preservation.
Planning Commission Meetings
The Planning Commission meetings is a public forum where a group of appointed citizens discuss items such as: Zoning Change Requests, Subdivision Plat Approvals, Conditional Use Permits, Variances, and Amendments to the Development Code and Comprehensive Plan. Planning Commission meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Changes may be made or meetings may be canceled due to no items of business to be discussed and or holidays.

Board of Adjustment Meetings
The Board of Adjustments hears variance requests or appeals to the Development Code, and all other adopted codes of the City for non-safety issues. The Board of Adjustments holds public hearings and makes recommendations when updates are proposed. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month. If there are no applications, no business to consider, or there is a holiday, the meeting will be canceled and rescheduled for a later date.

Annexation Plan
The city of Huntsville has reviewed its boundaries of the city and its extraterritorial jurisdiction and has determined that it does not intend to annex any territory that in order to be annexed after three years is required to be in an annexation plan.
