Huntsville Fire Department: Fire Prevention

Welcome to the Huntsville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Page!

Our primary goal at the Huntsville Fire Department is to keep our community safe. Fire prevention is key to reducing the risk of fire and ensuring everyone is prepared in an emergency.

Fire Prevention Tips:

  1. Smoke Alarms:

    • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas.
    • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
    • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
  2. Fire Extinguishers:

    • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, near the fireplace, and in the garage.
    • Learn how to use a fire extinguisher using the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.
  3. Electrical Safety:

    • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and use extension cords properly.
    • Ensure all electrical appliances are in good condition and replace damaged cords.
  4. Cooking Safety:

    • Never leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable items away from the stove.
    • Have a lid nearby to smother small grease fires.
  5. Heating Safety:

    • Keep combustibles at least three feet away from space heaters.
    • Have your heating system inspected annually by a professional.
  6. Escape Plan:

    • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all family members.
    • Identify two ways out of every room and establish a meeting place outside.

Fire Safety for Businesses:

  • Ensure that fire exits are clearly marked and unobstructed.
  • Conduct regular fire drills and train employees on fire safety procedures.
