Huntsville Fire Department: Fireworks Safety
Welcome to the Huntsville Fire Department's Fireworks Safety Page!
Fireworks are a popular way to celebrate special occasions, but they can also pose serious risks if not handled properly. The Huntsville Fire Department is committed to ensuring your celebrations are safe and enjoyable. Please review the following information on fireworks safety and local regulations.
Important Notice:
Fireworks are not allowed to be used within the city limits of Huntsville. While possession of fireworks is permitted, their use is strictly prohibited within city limits to ensure public safety and prevent fires.
Local Fireworks Regulations:
According to Municode Sec. 32-27:
(a) Prohibited Actions:
- No person shall cast, throw, or fire any squib, rocket, cracker, torpedo, grenade, or other combustible fireworks of any kind in the city.
- No person shall exhibit or possess, with the intent to give away, sell, or offer for sale any squib, rocket, cracker, torpedo, grenade, or other combustible fireworks of any kind within the city.
(b) Exceptions:
- This section does not apply to the sale, storage, or use of railroad track torpedoes or other signaling devices used by railroads, nor to the sale, storage, or use of flashlight composition by photographers or dealers in photographic supplies.
- The section also does not apply to supervised public displays of fireworks sponsored by the city, other political subdivisions of the state, or bona fide civic, educational, or religious organizations with their principal office in the county. Such displays must be performed by a bonded and insured pyrotechnic expert in compliance with reasonable requirements established by the city fire marshal.
- For the purpose of this section, a "pyrotechnic expert" is an individual who, through experience, training, and state licensure, has demonstrated the required skill and ability for safely setting up and discharging displays of fireworks.
Fireworks Safety Tips:
Follow Local Regulations:
- As fireworks use is prohibited within city limits, please refrain from using them in these areas. Check local regulations for fireworks use outside city limits.
Purchase from Licensed Dealers (if applicable):
- If using fireworks outside city limits, always buy from licensed and reputable dealers. Avoid homemade or illegal fireworks.
Read and Follow the Instructions:
- Carefully read and follow the instructions provided with each firework. Ignoring instructions can lead to accidents and injuries.
Safety Gear:
- Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling fireworks. Ensure that children and pets are kept at a safe distance.
Designate a Safe Launch Area:
- Choose an open, clear area away from flammable materials, buildings, and vegetation. Do not use fireworks indoors or in confined spaces.
Have a Bucket of Water or Fire Extinguisher:
- Keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby when using fireworks. This is essential for dousing any accidental fires.
Never Relight a "Dud":
- If a firework fails to ignite or goes out, do not attempt to relight it. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposing of it properly.
Dispose of Fireworks Properly:
- After use, soak spent fireworks in water and dispose of them in a metal trash container. Never throw fireworks away in regular trash.
Emergency Contacts:
- In case of an emergency, contact 911 immediately. Report any fires or injuries promptly.
